Observations from the intersection of Watts and Woods

4 notes

first time in an apple store the other day and was initially really impressed with the display benches in the apple store, which appeared to be finger jointed large dimension, clear hard maple. beatiful, enviable stock.
on further inspection though, it’s just veneer: though they went to the additional effort of using edge and face veneers when turning corners, the end grain doesn’t match up…
i’m sure they can “justify” it from a design perspective given the number of cable chases required, (and ignoring the obvious fact that it’s WAY less expesive to produce) but I really feel like it’s an emblematic deception: looks extremely solid, but one decent ding on a corner and the jig’s up… like making a castle from stone veneer… the more i think about it, frankly, the more disappointed i get…
but, apple can probably nearly always get away with it because you have to actually understand and appreciate the structure of wood to realize that it’s chicanery…
